GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Reds shortstop prospect Edwin Arroyo had surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn left labrum in his left shoulder. President of baseball operations Nick Krall said Arroyo will miss the 2024 season.

Arroyo, 20, is ranked by MLB Pipeline as Cincinnati's No. 3 prospect and No. 67 overall. He was in big league camp earlier this spring and had impressed many with his play on defense, as well as his offense.

On March 13 against the Giants, Arroyo was injured when he dove back to first base on a pickoff play. He was unable to play in either of the two Reds games for the Spring Breakout prospect showcase.

The switch-hitting Arroyo was targeted to open the 2024 season at Double-A Chattanooga. Last year, he batted .252 with a .757 OPS, 13 home runs, 60 RBIs and 29 stolen bases over 123 games with High-A Dayton and Chattanooga.

On July 30, 2022, Arroyo was one of two featured prospects acquired -- along with Noelvi Marte -- from the Mariners in the trade for ace Luis Castillo.

MLB Pipeline targeted Arroyo to arrive in the big leagues by 2025, but his injury could prolong the timeline.
